Saudi Arabia

A country in SW Asia occupying most of the Arabian peninsula; population 28,686,600 (est. 2009); official language, Arabic; capital, Riyadh.

The birthplace of Islam in the 7th century, Saudi Arabia emerged from the Arab revolt against the Turks during the First World War to become an independent kingdom in 1932. Since the Second World War the economy has been revolutionized by the exploitation of the area’s oil resources, and Saudi Arabia is the largest oil producer in the Middle East. It continues to be governed along traditional Islamic lines.
