A fortress and naval base in Ukraine, near the southern tip of the Crimea; population 339,900 (est. 2009). The focal point of military operations during the Crimean War, it fell to Anglo-French forces in September 1855 after a year-long siege. Ukrainian and Russian name Sevastopol.
