A city in southern Spain, the capital of Andalusia, situated on the Guadalquivir River; population 699,759 (2008). A leading cultural centre of Moorish Spain, it was reclaimed by the Spanish in 1248, and rapidly became prominent as a centre of trade with the colonies of the New World. Spanish name Sevillaseˈβija.
