Soane, Sir John

Pronunciation: /səʊn/
(1753–1837), English architect. His later work avoided unnecessary ornament and adopted structural necessity as the basis of design. His designs included the Bank of England (1788–1833, since rebuilt) and his house in London, now a museum.
