South Carolina

Pronunciation: /ˌkarəˈlʌɪnə/
A state of the US on the Atlantic coast; population 4,479,800 (est. 2008); capital, Columbia. The region was permanently settled by the English from 1663. Separated from North Carolina in 1729, South Carolina became one of the original thirteen states of the Union (1788). In 1860 it was the first state to secede from the Union, precipitating the American Civil War.
