Svalbard

Pronunciation: /ˈsvɑːlbɑː/
A group of islands in the Arctic Ocean about 640 km (400 miles) north of Norway; population 2,100 (est. 2009). They came under Norwegian sovereignty in 1925. The chief settlement (on Spitsbergen) is Longyearbyen.
