Vanderbilt, Cornelius

Pronunciation: /ˈvandəbɪlt/
(1794–1877), American businessman and philanthropist. He amassed a fortune from shipping and railroads, and made an endowment to found Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee (1873).
