Definition of visual ray in English:
An imaginary line representing the path of light from an object to the eye.
- Alberti has here applied some of the geometric elaboration of Euclid's Optics to the visual rays that Plato described in the Timaeus as an ocular ‘fire’ mixing in sympathy with external light.
- In contrast to Plato, who argued that the visual ray, which proceeded from the eye, requires the support of and coalesces with external light, Archytas explained vision in terms of the visual ray alone.
- Euclid adhered to the centrifugal theory of visual rays.
