Waitangi, Treaty of

Pronunciation: /wʌɪˈtaŋi/
A treaty signed in 1840 at the settlement of Waitangi in New Zealand, which formed the basis of the British annexation of New Zealand. Subsequent contraventions of the treaty by the British led to the New Zealand Wars.
