His nineteen surviving plays show important innovations in the handling of traditional myths, such as the introduction of realism, an interest in feminine psychology, and the portrayal of abnormal and irrational states of mind. Notable works: Medea, Hippolytus, Electra, Trojan Women, and Bacchae.
