2A country in the western Pacific to the north of the equator, composed of hundreds of islands in the Caroline Islands group; population 107,400 (est. 2009); languages, English (official), Austronesian languages; capital, Palikir. The islands were administered by the US as part of the Pacific Islands Trust Territory from 1947 and entered into free association with the US as an independent state in 1986. Full name Federated States of Micronesia.
