Gambia

Pronunciación: /ˈɡambēə/
1 (also the Gambia) A country on the coast of West Africa; population 1,778,100 (est. 2009); capital, Banjul; languages, English (official), Malinke and other indigenous languages, and Creole.

Gambia consists of a narrow strip of territory on either side of the Gambia River that forms an enclave in Senegal. It was created a British colony in 1843 and became a republic in 1970. It was an independent member of the Commonwealth from1965 to 2013.

2A river in West Africa that rises near Labé in Guinea and flows for 500 miles (800 km) through Senegal and Gambia to meet the Atlantic Ocean at Banjul.
