Cultural Note: British Council

Una organización que corresponde en algunos aspectos al Instituto Cervantes español, financiada por el gobierno británico para promover la difusión de la lengua inglesa en el mundo y el conocimiento de la cultura, literatura y costumbres de las distintas naciones y regiones del Reino Unido. Tiene sedes en 227 ciudades en 109 países. En EEUU no existe ningún equivalente exacto del British Council, pero en cada embajada norteamericana existe una filial del Departamento de Estado llamada Information Resource Center, que desempeña algunas de las mismas funciones culturales.

    A portero is a superintendent in an apartment building who looks after it, keeps it clean, delivers mail, and keeps an eye on comings and goings. Porteros often have an apartment in the building as part of their pay. The portero, and particularly the female portera, are part of popular culture. They have a reputation for being inquisitive and fond of gossip.
