After overthrowing President Batista, he set up a communist regime that survived the abortive Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the collapse of the Soviet bloc. In 2008, he stood down in favor of his brother Raúl. Raúl (1931-), president since 2008; full name Raúl Modesto Castro Ruz. He was Cuba’s vice president 1976–2008, an office created for him by his brother Fidel.
