( 1879–1968), German chemist, pioneer of nuclear fission. Together with Lise Meitner, he discovered the element protactinium in 1917. The pair discovered nuclear fission in 1938 with Fritz Strassmann ( 1902–80). Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1944), shared with Strassmann.
