A disease of bees that is caused by a parasitic mite.
- The mite is Acarapis woodi, order (or subclass) Acari
- The island is the place of origin of Acarine Disease, formerly known as Isle of Wight disease, a rapidly spreading ailment that is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of bees a year.
So named because it was first observed in the Isle of Wight in 1904.
