( 1938-), king of Spain 1975–2014; full name Juan Carlos Victor María de Borbón y Borbón; grandson of Alfonso XIII. Franco’s chosen successor, he became king after Franco’s death. His reign saw Spain’s increasing liberalization and its entry into NATO and the European Community. In 2014 he abdicated in favor of his son Prince Felipe.
