An island off southwestern Cuba, in the Caribbean Sea; population 71,000. Long a source of jurisdictional disputes between Cuba and the US, it has been a resort and a prison colony. Renamed in 1978, it has many facilities dedicated to youth. English name Isle of Youth; formerly Isle of Pines.
