Often heading more than one orchestra at the same time, he has been music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra 1961–67, the Los Angeles Philharmonic 1962–78, the New York Philharmonic 1978–91, the Israel Philharmonic since 1977 (appointed for life), and the Bavarian State Opera 1998–2006.
