( 1892–1957), US opera singer; born in Italy; full name Ezio Fortunato Pinza. A bass, he performed with the Metropolitan Opera from 1926 until 1948 and was responsible for the return of Mozart’s operas to the Met repertory. In 1949, he appeared on Broadway in South Pacific.
