( 1924–99), US theatrical director; born in Panama. He was noted for directing plays by Eugene O’Neill and for founding Circle in the Square, a theater in New York City’s Greenwich Village. He directed many Broadway plays, including Long Day’s Journey into Night (1956), Strange Interlude (1963). and A Moon for the Misbegotten (1973).
