A member of a North African Muslim religious fraternity founded in 1837 by Sidi Muhammad ibn Ali es-Senussi (d.1859).
- The Bedouin tribes had shown no interest in the ecstatic practices of the Sufis that were gaining adherents in the towns, but they were attracted in great numbers to the Senussis.
- The column's only hope of getting its vehicles out again was to defeat the Senussi and so gain time to try to level out the defile by digging.
