( 1874–1922), British explorer. During one of his Antarctic expeditions (1914–16), Shackleton’s ship Endurance was crushed in the ice. He and his crew eventually reached Elephant Island, from where he and five others made an 800-mile (1,300-km) open-boat voyage to South Georgia to get help.
