A city in western Russia, a port on the Volga River, southeast of Nizhni Novgorod; population 607,000 (est. 2008). Between 1924 and 1992 it was called Ulyanovsk, in honor of Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov Lenin, who was born here in 1870.
