( 1915-), US physicist. His development of microwave oscillators and amplifiers led to his invention of the maser in 1954. He later showed that an optical maser (a laser) was possible. He shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physics with Nicolay Basov (1922–2001) and Aleksandr Prokhorov (1916–2002).
