Definition of Trieste in English:

A city in northeastern Italy, the largest port on the Adriatic Sea; population 205,341 (2008). Formerly held by Austria (1382–1918), Trieste was annexed by Italy after World War I. The Free Territory of Trieste was created after World War II but it was returned to Italy in 1954.
