( 1892–1944) US politician and lawyer; full name Wendell Lewis Willkie. The Republican presidential candidate in 1940, he unsuccessfully ran against incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was running for his third term. He later supported Roosevelt’s war effort programs and policies.
