He was the first to synthesize quinine, cholesterol, chlorophyll, and vitamin B12, and with Roald Hoffmann ( 1937-), a US chemist, born in Poland, discovered symmetry-based rules governing the course of rearrangement reactions involving cyclic intermediates. Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1965).
