Bowles, Paul

Pronunciation: /bōlz/
(1910–99), US writer and composer; full name Paul Frederick Bowles. In the 1930s, he studied music in Paris and worked as a music critic and composer. His novels, which include The Sheltering Sky (1949), Let It Come Down (1952), and The Spider’s House (1966), typically concern Westerners in the Arab world.
