Central African Republic

Pronunciation: /ˌsentrəl ˌafrəkən rēˈpəblik/
A country in central Africa; population 4,511,500 (est. 2009); capital, Bangui; languages, French (official) and Sango. Former name (until 1958) Ubanghi Shari.

Formerly a French colony, it became a republic within the French Community in 1958 and a fully independent state in 1960. Some stability was achieved when a civilian government was elected in 1993
