A consistent opponent of appeasement during the 1930s, he replaced Neville Chamberlain as British prime minister in 1940 and led Britain throughout World War II. Notable works: The Second World War (1948–53) and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (1956–58). Nobel Prize for Literature (1953).
