(In the Bible) a national deity of the ancient Philistines, represented as a fish-tailed man.

Origin

Via Latin and Greek from Hebrew dāḡōn, perhaps from dāḡān 'corn', but said (according to folk etymology) to be from dāḡ 'fish'.
