Defoe, Daniel

Pronunciation: /dəˈfō/
(1660–1731), English novelist and journalist. His novel Robinson Crusoe (1719) is loosely based on the true story of shipwrecked sailor Alexander Selkirk and has a claim to being the first British novel. Other notable works: Moll Flanders (1722) and A Journal of the Plague Year (1722).
