A unique and persistent string of characters used to identify a journal article, website, or other item of intellectual property, typically one in digital form.
- Each article will be allocated a unique identifying code (the ‘digital object identifier’ or ‘doi’) that can be used in bibliographic searches.
- The familiar year, volume and page number references were replaced by a 20 character string known as a digital object identifier.
- Constructing queries with the digital object identifier corresponding to each published article would be an ideal means of retrieving articles as DOIs are unique.
