(1821–81), Russian novelist; full name Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky. His novels reveal his psychological insight, savage humor, and concern with the religious, political, and moral problems posed by human suffering. Notable works: Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (1868), and The Brothers Karamazov (1880).
