An intermediate electrode which emits additional electrons in a photomultiplier or similar amplifying device.
- A gating circuit that inverts the polarity of dynodes 1 and 3, for up to 1.5 ms after the laser pulse, protects the photomultiplier from the intense prompt fluorescence light pulse.
