Emerson, Ralph Waldo

Pronunciation: /ˈemərsən/
(1803–82), US philosopher and poet. In 1832, while visiting Britain, he became associated with German idealism. On his return to the US, he evolved the concept of transcendentalism, which found expression in his essay Nature (1836).
