Denoting an ancient Greek lyric poem celebrating a victory.
- But these poems range much wider: 6 (the statue of Zeus at Olympia) reads as an epodic epigram, 8 as an iambic epinician; 7-11 record various aitia; 12 celebrates a birth.
- Praise of the victor, his family and his homeland is an integral element of the epinician ode.
Early 17th century: from Greek epinikion, neuter (used as a noun) of epinikios 'relating to victory', + -an.
