Everest, Mount

Pronunciation: /ˈev(ə)rəst/
A mountain in the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and Tibet. Rising to 29,028 feet (8,848 m), it is the highest mountain in the world; it was first climbed in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Tibetan name Qomolungma.

Origin

Named after Sir George Everest (1790–1866), a supervisor for the British government in India.
