Either of a pair of sound holes resembling an ∫ and a reversed ∫ in shape, cut in the front of musical instruments of the violin family and some other stringed instruments such as semi-acoustic electric guitars and mandolins.
- His most famous picture of her is the photograph entitled Le Violin d' Ingres, in which he has painted a violin's f-holes on her naked back.
- The instrument's f-holes make sheepish eyes, while in the curve of the belly there is the suggestion of a gloopy smile - as if the fiddler, exhausted by the non-stop music, is too polite, or too immersed, to retire.
