Fermi, Enrico

Pronunciation: /ˈfermē/
(1901–54), US atomic physicist; born in Italy. He directed the first controlled nuclear chain reaction in 1942 and joined the Manhattan Project to work on the atom bomb. Nobel Prize for Physics (1938).
