Halsey, William Frederick

Pronunciation: /ˈhôlzē/
(1882–1959), US naval officer; known as Bull. He was commander of Allied naval forces in the South Pacific 1942–44 and of the US Third Fleet 1944–45, during the American advance on Japan.
