(1905–76), US industrialist, movie producer, and aviator; full name Howard Robard Hughes. Having acquired a fortune through his father’s tool company, he began producing movies in the 1920s and broke many world aviation records during the 1930s. He lived as a recluse for the last 25 years of his life. Notable movies: Hell’s Angels (1930) and The Outlaw (1943).
