Definition of j'adoube in English:
A declaration by a player intending to adjust the placing of a chessman without making a move with it.
- If White disturbs the pieces he can just say "J'adoube" and rectify that with no penalty. If White grabbed the King (for some incomprehensible reason), "J'adoube" still saves the day (if said immediately).
- He withdrew the move, and made another, claiming that he was merely adjusting the pieces on the board (J'adoube).
French, literally 'I adjust'.
