(1917–77), US poet; full name Robert Traill Spence Lowell. His poetry, often describing his manic depression, is notable for its intense confessional nature and for its complex imagery. Notable works: Lord Weary’s Castle (1946), Life Studies (1959), and The Dolphin (1973).
