An industrial city and river port in southeastern France, situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region; population 480,778 (2006). Founded by the Romans in ad 43 as Lugdunum, it was an important city of Roman Gaul. French name Lyon.
