Mazarin, Jules

Pronunciation: /ˈmäzərin/ Pronunciation: /mäzäˈraN/
(1602–61), French statesman, born in Italy; Italian name Giulio Mazzarino. Sent to Paris as the Italian papal legate (1634), he became a naturalized Frenchman and was made a cardinal in 1641 and then chief minister of Louis XIV in 1642.
