1 (also nereid) Greek Mythology Any of the sea nymphs, daughters of Nereus. They include Thetis, mother of Achilles.
2 Astronomy A satellite of Neptune, the farthest from the planet, discovered in 1949. It has an irregular shape, a diameter of 211 miles (340 km), and an eccentric orbit.
