A republic in the western Pacific Ocean, a group of about 100 of the Caroline Islands; population 20,800 (est. 2009); capital, Melekeok; languages, English, Palauan, Sonsorolese, Tobi, and Angaur.

It became a part of the US Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1947, began self-governing internally in 1980, and achieved independence in 1994
