A flat-floored depression in a karstic region, especially in Slovenia, with steep enclosing walls and a covering of alluvium.
- The site is a karst depression, or polje, with a natural brook that vanishes into one big and several small ponors (swallow hole).
- The largest and most important among them is the large, fertile depression of Blatsko polje, which used to contain a periodic lake.
